How I Work With You

My highly effective approach is brief, practical, and solution-focused, supporting ways of moving forward to the kind of life people really want to live. Within 1 or 2 sessions, there are typically welcome shifts, and on average it will need around 2 to 6 sessions. The therapy I mainly use is based on the practical systems of the Human Givens approach (see www.hgi.org.uk ), which uses the most up to date research along with methods such as CBT and NLP. I aim to help someone with emotional troubles through dealing with those disturbing emotions and establishing a more positive lifestyle. I would work on discovering, with you, how you could have the basic “needs of life” met, in balance, and in a way that is relevant for your specific situation. This might be by using psychological and visualisation techniques, developing strategies with you for relaxation and achieving calm, or by mentoring and coaching towards agreed goals. My aim would always be to help you shift things on as quickly as possible, and move towards a life that works well for you!
About Me

I am Don Elwick, and have a B.Sc. in Psychology. I have experienced a wide range of work and family situations during my life, from teaching in schools to office management, from bringing up my children to running a building business, along with dealing with others’ severe disability, life problems, ageing, loss and illness. Along the way I have completed the training and received certification for the P.G.Cert.Ed, the Human Givens Diploma, and have the Enhanced DBS Certificate. I belong to the British Psychology Society, take on clients for PTSD Resolution (a charity for military veterans recovery: www.ptsdresolution.org), and am a registered member of the Human Givens Institute. I regularly attend further trainings and conferences with these various organisations, as well as undertaking the normal CPD to keep my knowledge up to date. Outside of my psychotherapy work, I keep busy with gardening, arts, walking in the countryside, travel, and building projects, along with enjoying things with my family and friends.

Any Questions?
Q - Where do I see clients?
I am based in Heathfield, East Sussex where I have my office, but also see clients in Brighton, and can travel if necessary. Contact me to see how we can work on making a useful shift!
Q - How do you contact me?
Email: info@mind-shift-therapy.co.uk - Tel: 07956-696864
Q – What are my fees?
The fees are based on a payment of £60 per hour, which would be charged pro-rata depending on the length of the session. If a longer session of, say, an hour and a half is required e.g. for initial assessment plus beginning on assisting recovery, that would be 90. For a shorter session, perhaps of 45 minutes when working online, that would cost £45.
Q – How many sessions would be needed?
I do not book up a series of sessions ahead with clients, as the number required may be only 1 or 2, and usually not more than 6 – it is up to both you and me to decide on progress and need for further sessions.
Q – What about confidentiality?
We will have a signed Confidentiality Agreement, and all records about therapy sessions are kept properly, conforming to the GDPR regulations.
Q – Can I have online sessions?
Yes, I can "meet" you online using Skype or Zoom. It is always preferable to carry out sessions face-to-face, but especially for further sessions after the initial one, that can work well enough. Please ask if you would prefer that method of therapy.
NOTE – in the current situation with Covid-19 lock-down, working online is the only available option, and this is appropriate in these circumstances.
